Alexa Sutherland, LCSW

Clinical Supervisor

Alexa Sutherland is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who works with children, young teens and families. Alexa utilizes a primarily play based, client centered approach in her work while integrating creative interventions, CBT, DBT and trauma informed evidenced based treatment.

Alexa’s clinical speciality is working with school aged autistic individuals as well as those struggling with ADHD, sensory processing disorder, emotional regulation, anxiety, OCD, depression and trauma related disorders. Alexa additionally offers parent coaching for parents looking to understand their child’s diagnosis and/or are struggling with effective communication with their child.

Alexa graduated from Tulane University in 2014 with a Masters of Social Work and specialized certificate in Disaster Mental Health and Trauma Studies. Since then, Alexa has worked in a variety of settings including extended day treatment, psychiatric hospitals, public schools and in equine assisted therapy. Alexa is trained in the DBT and DBT in Schools models and often incorporates DBT concepts into sessions in a playful and age appropriate way. Alexa has been extensively trained and professionally supervised in DIR Floortime, a unique play based and evidence based approach to therapy with autistic individuals. Additionally, Alexa is trained in implementing the Zones of Regulation and Social Thinking curriculums, is a certified trainer in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and is a certified Life Is Good Playmaker.

Alexa joined Shoreline Psychological in 2022 after moving back to her home state of CT. Alexa lives in Killingworth with her family– including a toddler, retired therapy dog, high needs rescue pitbull and flock of chickens.
